Nathan Howland is a producer, improviser, and audio technologist from San Jose, California, currently based in Cleveland, Ohio. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from San José State University, where he trained as a saxophonist while developing a broader practice as an electronic musician.
His work sits at the intersection of music, performance, and technology, with a focus on experimental electronic improvisation. He develops custom performance tools and generative audio systems designed to bring greater intentionality, nuance, and responsiveness to live electronic music. Working with platforms such as Max, Ableton Live, Python, and JUCE, he explores new approaches to sound generation, including the use of machine learning for timbral analysis and creative audio processing.
Alongside his solo work, Howland works as a producer and audiovisual designer for pop artists, bringing experience in both sound and live visuals to large scale performances and independent music spaces alike, including contributions to shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and performances at 924 Gilman Street. Across his work, he is interested in building tools that make electronic performance feel more expressive, immediate, and human.
